The Toboggan Run trail (tour companies may use a different name) is located in Mae Win and starts at the junction between the 1013 road and 4053.  The trail starts along a dual dirt track where you will follow for 10 kilometers to a small village called Mor Wa Kee.  The trail to this point is undulating with lots of uphill and downhill sections but nothing to strenuous.   There is some nice scenery along the way and the village is nice enough for a quick stop and rest as well as photo break.

Follow the trail for another several kilometers or so and there will be a break in the dual track turning off into the forest where the fun downhill begins.  There is a nice waterfall close to the downhill trailhead which is worth some time to explore.  Tour companies that use this trail often camp nearby as well.  The trail gets its name from the next section which is a semi paved single track twisting and turning  its way down the mountain with intermittent sections of dirt single track and paved sections.  This may not sound like fun doing downhill on concrete but it’s a great section with steep banked berms and natural jumps to play around on.  The dirt sections are smooth and flowy which makes a change from the usual roots and rocks.

The trail ends in a small village back on the 1013 road with several small places to grab a bite to eat.  From here it is best to have a truck to pick you up to take you onwards.

The Toboggan Run trail is 19.8 kilometers in length with 445m of elevation gain.  For those familiar with the area it is easy enough to attempt alone, however a tour company would be recommended as a shuttle service is essential.  Trailhead Thailand can organize cycling tours around Mae Win and Mae Wang and are highly recommended.  The tour can be completed in 2 hours of relaxed riding so it’s a good idea to combine with other trails in the area including Death Valley.
