Cycling Trail in Mae Wang
Description | Details |
Trail Name: | Death Valley |
Trail Location: | Mae Wang |
Trail Type: | XC |
Trail Difficulty: | Moderate |
The Death Valley cycling trail is a 13km long trail which is 90% downhill with a few small intermittent climbs. Starting from Mae Wang district an hour south west of Chiang Mai city, Death Valley is a fun trail along mostly smooth dirt double track with snakes its way alongside a river down the valley which eventually leads out close to Wat Huai Thong. Several rock gardens and river crossings add some excitement and riders should be wary of some steep ruts in certain places.
The trailhead starts at the top of a steep winding road close to Wat Luang Khun Win, the road of which at the time of writing was being paved but it is still advisable to use a 4×4 truck as it is steep in places. Due to the remote trailhead and end location it is not recommended to attempt this without an uplift arranged or tour company to show you the trail, it is seldom used by mountain bikers and there are few people around.
To get there, follow canal road South out of Chiang Mai for approximately 30 minutes and turn right onto the 1013 past Mae Wang hospital and a few km past the elephant camp is a small road leading up the mountain to the trailhead.
There are no facilities once you are past the elephant camp so best to stock up on water and snacks and be sure to bring spare tyres and tools with you.
