To: Convention Center to Huay Tung Tao

The XC trails around Huay Tung Tao lake are relatively well known among locals of Chiang Mai and there is a well developed network of XC trails in the area. For a good workout you can cycle from the convention center next to canal road all the way to Huay Tung Tao lake and beyond, and to make it more interesting it is possible to do the entire route off road.

Cafe de Oasis is a nice place to start opposite the convention center and a good place to have breakfast and coffee before the 10km trail to the lake. From here, head up to the Dhamma center at the foot of Doi Suthep at the base of Gee House Trail and follow the track uphill until it immediately heads in a Northerly direction along a relatively wide gravel track. You will pass through some stream beds over undulating terrain before reaching a fence which has had several sections cut out to make it possible to climb through. At this point you will be at the 700 year stadium at the top of the reservoir. You can then continue along a mix of single track and short paved sections following the base of the mountain to Huay Tung Tao lake.

Once you reach Huay Tung Tao lake there are numerous trails to follow, this example follows the better know XC track North of the lake heading towards Mae Rim in an anti-clockwise direction, this trail is well maintained, easy to follow and a lot of fun. If you’re feeling fit you can continue onwards to Mae Rim and perhaps to Sala coffee, which is a popular stop off point for cyclists. You can rejoin the XC track continuing in an anti-clockwise direction and eventually come out at the Northern end of the lake again. From here you can cycle on the road around the lake or continue cycling off road, just be aware of moto cross riders which are often in the area. If you’re feeling tired at this point there is a paved cycling trail heading back along canal road towards town. There are plenty of opportunities to try new start points or alternative trails, the most popular starting point is the 700 year stadium however the GPS route below is a slightly different route to the norm.
