Description Details
Trail Name: Slippery Pass
Trail Location: Chiang Mai
Trail Type: Enduro
Trail Difficulty: Moderate

To: Slippery Pass

Located in the remote district of Baan Huai Tong South of Chiang Mai, Slippery pass is great trail that traverses pine forests, 1600m passes, remote Hmong villages and secluded roads. The trail is generally only known to some motorbikers whom are very familiar with the area so it is not recommended doing this ride without an experienced guide, there is very little, if any phone signal for the duration of the ride and its unlikely you will meet anyone once you leave.

To get to the trail, head South along canal road heading towards Doi Inthanon before turning right onto the 1013 road heading West. There are several elephant camps and homestays in this area as well as a pleasant coffee shop serving Thai food and some Western food about 20km from the trailhead. The owner is an avid road biker and is a popular stop off point for road cyclists heading out from Chiang Mai on their weekly ride. The road turns right again onto the smaller 4053 which twists and turns up and over the mountain passing a few villages on the way before reaching the non descript trailhead which is essentially a left turn onto a dirt dual track.

From here it is a bit of an uphill slog up the mountain with intermittent sections of downhill passing some interesting scenery along the way. Eventually after a long downhill section the trail will head uphill again, this time narrowing to a single track which is quite overgrown in places. By this point the altitude gain will be 700m+ but the trail is gradual enough not to be too difficult. Once at the highest point you are surrounded by pine trees and the downhill trail is fast and flowing to the bottom. During rainy season the pass is nigh on impossible to cross hence the name and is best attempted during the winter months. The descent takes you from 1600m to 900m before coming back out onto the 4053. We took the easy option and got a lift up to the truck however if you want to add another 7km you can cycle up the hill to complete the loop.
