Chiang Dao is a stunning area only an hour North of Chiang Mai city dominated by Doi Luang Chiang Dao, the third highest mountain in Thailand at 2,225m. There are countless opportunities for mountain biking, but a fantastic route for a day trip is the Mae Na – Pa Kia route, which follows a trail West of the 107 highway along a quiet paved road, eventually turning to dirt track once higher up in the mountains, which loops around into Pa Kia close to the starting point.
The gradient is gentle for the first 3km with great scenery and views of Doi Luang. Eventually you will ride into the forest where the road starts getting steeper and steeper as it twists and turns up into the valley. As you continue for a few more kilometers you will pass through a pleasant old village called Ban Chom Khiri, which is a nice place to stop for a break and take a few photos. Just past the village the paved road ends and the dirt track starts. Before the highest point there are a couple of short, fast downhill sections before a grueling climb to the highest point. The climb is tough but the scenery makes it worthwhile, the total gain is 1,429m with a maximum altitude of 1,369m. From the highest point of this trails it is possible to continue even higher to a research station if you are feeling strong. If not, then take the trail heading North East for an hour of fast and fun downhill and smooth flowy double track. Other than a few small sections the downhill is around 12km in length and certainly makes up for a tough climb. Find time on the way down to admire the best views of Doi Luang as you will have unimpeded views across the valley of this spectacular mountain. Unfortunately more and more sections of the dirt trail are being paved so at some point in the near future it is likely the entire route will be paved.
The final 4km will take you through the quiet village of Pa Kia and the final km along the highway back to the start point. It is worth checking out one of the coffee shops further towards Chiang Dao town which offer more stunning views and a welcome cold drink.
