There are literally dozens of zipline companies in Chiang Mai so how do you decide what is the best zipline in Chiang Mai? Well, Flight of the Gibbon was the first zipline not only in Chiang Mai but all of Asia, with an international team of experts at hand to build the course in the mountains around Mae Kampong village, a picturesque area on the border between Chiang Mai and Lampang. The zipline features a range of short and long single ziplines, double ziplines, some rickety bridges to cross and even a superman zipline where your harness is attached to the cable at the base of your spine. This one in particular takes some courage to jump off the platform! The equipment is all top of the range, with Petzl climbing equipment as standard and all of the harnesses and ropes in immaculate condition. The cables are attached to the trees in such a way too that it doesn’t harm them so there has been much consideration into the surrounding environment.

The day starts with the van picking you up from the hotel of your choice and driving for just under an hour to Mae Kampong. From here you will be greeted by the staff, fill in a disclaimer and gear up for the 3 hour zipline canopy tour. The staff, or sky rangers as they’re called make the experience extra special, they no when a customer is scared and needs support to calm the nerves, but also know how to entertain the more confident guests and keep them happy and laughing throughout. They are also very supporting with children who can zipline at any age as long as they are over 100cm tall.

Once the guests are geared up they are driven a short way to the start of the zipline and after a safety briefing its time to go! The first few ziplines are short and designed to get people used to the harness and build confidence. Over time they get longer and faster until eventually you come to the longest at 800m which is so long you cant even see the end point. This is the highlight of the course as you wizz down the zipline at great speed with amazing views of the valley. You can even see the reintroduced gibbons at the start of the 800m line, whom have made one of the large trees their home.

At the end of the zipline canopy tour you reach the ‘avatar’ tree, a huge tree wrapped in a fig vine which really does look like something out of a movie. This is the final point and you abseil 30m down to the jungle floor where you can stop for a few photo opportunities and have a refreshing drink.

After the zipline tour guests are treated to a fantastic meal, which consists of several carefully chosen dishes representing the region. There is an impressive vegetarian selection too. As diners exchange stories, local musicians add to the atmosphere with some music played with traditional instruments.

After lunch its onto the next stop – Mae Kampong waterfall. This is a charming albeit small waterfall at the top of the valley where its possible to climb up the steep slopes to see several tiers of waterfall. There are again some nice views along the way and interesting flora and fauna. After the waterfall the van takes guests back to their hotels which marks the end of the tour, which for many is the highlight of their stay in Chiang Mai.
