You can find yourself trekking through the jungle, mountain biking off the beaten track, river rafting, cycling peaceful countryside roads, kayaking or all of the above.

Trekking adventures take place in a number of offbeat locations in the Central and Northern areas of Thailand, generally within the provinces of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai.

About Trekking in Northern Thailand

Home to the largest mountain in Thailand (Doi Inthanon) as well as numerous other mountains, jungles and waterfalls, Chiang Mai serves as the perfect base for trekking. Northern Thailand is a must visit for adventure seekers and nature lovers alike.

How to Choose Where to Go?

Trekking in Northern Thailand includes Doi Chiang Dao to the Maetang river area. This is one of the most popular destinations for Thailand trekking as it is only an hour’s drive from Chiang Mai and offers stunning jungle, waterfalls and wild rivers. Doi Chiang Dao is the country’s third tallest mountain and makes for a stunning backdrop. South West of Chiang Mai is Doi Inthanon which is the most visited National Park in Northern Thailand.

Umphang in Tak province is one of the wildest treks with far fewer visitors than more traditional trekking destinations like Chiang Mai. Umphang is a famed wildlife sanctuary so this trek is popular with those interested in viewing the flora and fauna.

Active Thailand’s trekking tours focus on beautiful nature and physical effort, rather than what most other companies offer which is visiting hill tribes only. When Active Thailand does include a hill tribe visit on their treks, the aim is to provide trekkers with an authentic insight into the life of the local people in a village which is far less visited than many other trekking company tours.
